Leptospermums are close relatives of the Myrtle, with similar small evergreen leaves and a dense, bushy habit. They come from Australia and New Zealand, and make large shrubs or small trees in seaside gardens and mild districts.

Elsewhere, they are tamed in size by winds and frosts, and grow best against a warm wall where they can reach 4m (13ft) or more. This variety, the New Zealand tea tree, is a variable species which has given rise to numerous varieties.

In high summer you can smell the tea tree oil in the leaves. A lot of greenfly and other bugs seem to hate this smell. You will be used to it, as it's the same as the tea tree you find in cosmetics and soaps. the flower are rich and desne and you can have a large colourful plant in no time. Butterflies and bees love it as to the smaller hawk moths (like humming birds) that feed on nectar. Great value only €6 ideal for coastal areas. Tougher then it looks and these plants are grown outdoors by the sea in Wexford.
